the grandest bridge in the colony

Prince Alfred Bridge Viaduct

Prince Alfred Bridge and timber viaduct. Despite the bridge was named in Prince Alfred's honour, he never visited the Gundagai. Some locals did not want it named after a royal member.

The name of the bridge leads to a more interesting story:
Prince Alfred was Queen Victoria's second son and was the first member of the royal family to visit Australia. During his tour, he was shot in an assassination attempt by an Irishman (Henry O'Farrell) at Clontarf (northern Sydney) on 12th March 1868. Prince Alfred tried unsuccessfully to intervene the court and save his would-be killer's life. O'Farrell was hanged.

Nice photo Antony, but I did not know of this bridge, even though I have been to Gundagai, at least once in my life.

Thank you. The bridges were now closed, but kept for historical purpose. The bridge is certainly not as famous as the Dog on the Tuckerbox.
