iOS 7's new interface and layout
During yesterday's WWDC 2013 Keynotes, Apple announced the new iOS 7's simplified interface and new features. In this blog entry, I will focus on the new interface.
In the first glimpse, we can notice the simplified style. Icons and interfaces are simplified, and fonts are in thin style (it is commonly believed to be Helvetica Neue Light or Helvetica Neue Ultra Light or a variation of it). As Apple mentioned, the new iOS 7 interface is to be simple and focused.
Firstly, every new icon in iOS 7 represents the job each app is designed for pretty well (the "basics"). (Except I personally still can't link the new Game Center icon with its function well.) MobileSyrup.com has an article on the icons used in iOS 6 vs iOS 7. Without a doubt, this change could be a love and hate debate. Some of us started using iPhone as early as it first released in 2007. (I started using iPhone since 2008 with iPhone 3G.) Personally, I am accustomed to the current (iOS 5/6) iPhone icons. New icons, weather they are nice or not, do require some time to adjust. For one thing, most new icons are pretty familiar to recognise.
Overall, the new icons and the font used are very elegant. However, I do have to point out my concern of thin typeface. It could be difficult for those with less than perfect eyesight or elderly iPhone users. Perhaps, the Retina screen's high resolution will make the thin typeface easy to read, however, I do hope that somewhere in the Settings (Accessibility), the fonts can be set to "normal/regular" for easier reading.
Like the new simplified look or not? I shall give it some time to try it. I might like it and find it really after some usage. Time will tell.
The iOS 7 beta software and SDK are available immediately for iOS Developer Program members. iOS 7 will be available as a free software update for iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, iPad mini and iPod touch (fifth generation) this fall. Some features may not be available on all products. If you are not a developer, I would recommend you not to rush for beta software.
