looking for a dater. Antony does not speak English

Well, I was looking for a “dater” in a newsagent. Apparently the shop assistant did not know what I was looking for.

By “dater”, I meant a date stamp, a rubber stamp that I can stamp dates.

So the story goes:

A fair-skin English-speaking shop assistant asked me if I was looking for anything in particular. I said to her, “do you sell dater?” She was a bit confused. I then told her that I was looking for rubber stamp.

She then pointed the rubber stamps area to me, except those were smilie faces or "Paid", "Faxed" type of rubber stamps. I told her that I was looking for rubber stamps that can stamp dates. She replied they don't have it, but I saw some behind her (which is nowhere near where she pointed me at first).

self inking daterSo the newsagent has a dater, but not the one I was looking for. I wanted a “self inking” one. This fair-skin English-speaking assistant did not understand “dater” earlier, she did not understand what “self inking” is either.

She pointed me to DIY rubber stamps. No, I did not need a DIY rubber stamp, but I wanted a self inking dater rubber stamps.

Applying Rev. Dr. Wu Yi's logic, it must be me not speaking English. However, this fair-skin English-speaking lady works in a newsagent that sells stationary. Rubber stamps are not that uncommon.

They did not have the self inking version I was looking for. They did have one that requires a stamp pad. Perhaps if I follow Don's analogy, I should have bought a regular dater (non-self inking) and an stamp pad as replacing the ink pad in self inking dater would likely to cost more. Unlike spacious beautiful Boston and picturesque Quincy, I don't have room to store two objects

Yes, it was certainly your poor choice of language that caused the beginning of the problem. To my uncertain knowledge,"dater" has never been used to mean "a date stamp". In DON'S beautiful Boston, a "dater" might be someone who goes on a date or goes dating. The service person, perhaps, should have known her stock better. She certainly directed you many options in a helpful way.
Maybe if you came to Kingsford remote village newsagent, the non-fair-skinned, Asian, shop assistant may have understood your fractured English?

In rubber stamp business, the word "dater" is very commonly used. E.g. http://www.klingstedtbrothers.com/Store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=126 they refer to is as "... Dater Rubber Stamp" She even needed me to explain what "self inking" is.

Klingstedt Brothers are an American company, hence the sloppy English usage!
