half Don's antique Cube

Back in July 2000, that's more than a decade ago, which makes it half Don's age, Apple announced a revolutionary product... Power Mac G4 Cube. It was such a beautiful product in an 8-inch cube. If you wind back the clock another 10 years (which makes it Don's age), such powerful device would have required the size of a washing machine at least.

Since the first time I saw this Power Mac G4 Cube (an actual product in Harvey Norman (NZ)), I always wanted one. Unfortunately, back then, I couldn't afford it. Now, more than a decade later, I could finally get one cheaply (second hand).

Despite the revolutionary design and size, and the love from Cube owners, Apple discontinued this product in July 2001 (just few days short of one year availability to the public). Well, Apple later released even more compact Mac mini.

A while back, Laurent and I drove to Newcastle to pick up this antique computer. It was such a beauty when I touched it.

I couldn't resist on setting it up at hotel (in Newcastle). Here's the photo:

And the home setup:
Power Mac G4 Cube

The speed is nowhere as fast as Don's superfast laptop. However, it is still reasonably fast if you don't insist on running the latest OS X. Unlike those open-source extremists, I don't demand on latest of whatsoever. Despite not being fast in today's measure, the design is still beautiful.

This G4 Cube is virtually silent since it does not have fans to cool down the components. No fans to cool down CPU (PowerPC 450MHz) nor the video card. The only thing that is spinning is the hard disk and any CDs I insert into it.
Well, I might replace the hard disk to a silent version.

Yes, this Power Mac G4 Cube comes with 17-inch Apple Studio Display (LCD/ADC), and original Harman Kardon transparent speakers. I might upgrade the CPU in the future. Please watch the video clips at the beginning of this entry, you will like it.

Finally, Antony has a Cube!
