less is more

In the good old days, to judge the computer speed, we can pretty much just look at the clock speed, the higher the MHz (or GHz) means faster, hence the better. For example, a Pentium 4 2.8GHz is of course faster than Pentium 4 2.0GHz, and apart from the RAM, video card and storage aspects, the 2.8GHz is of course better than 2.0GHz.

It seems like the performance is no longer simply judged by just the clock speed.

HP Compaqnx 6325Back in July 2006, Don bought a laptop, and I nicknamed it “superfast 64-bit dual-core laptop(to Don's disliking) as the 64-bit dual-core CPU was pretty new back then, and it was pretty much unheard of on a laptop at that time.

Anyhow, Don's laptop features fast clock speed of 2.0 GHz (AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60). The MacBook Air I recently purchased is only clocked at 1.8 GHz (Intel Core i7). It is pretty embarrass that after 5 years, I bought a laptop that is still slower (on clock speed) than Don's laptop bought in 2006. And it took me a while to catch up with Don's 64-bit dual-core laptop in March 2008 when I bought the MacBook Pro.

Thanks to a detailed post by Mandrake, you can't simply compare ‘just’ the clock speed these days. The results:
1.8GHz (Core i7) is faster than 2.0GHz (Turion X2) and also the 2.5GHz (Core 2 Duo) by a significant margin.

Checking the Primatelabs, the Geekbench benchmarks submitted by users around the world show:

2273 (64-bit) 2109 (32-bit) for 2.0GHz (Turion 64 X2 TL-60)

3712 (64-bit) 3290 (32-bit) for 2.5GHz (Core 2 Duo)

6400 (64-bit) 5795 (32-bit) for 1.8GHz (Core i7)
(the higher the benchmark, the better)
