T-Box, a poor man's TiVo

When you arrived at airport early and you got nothing to do there (in fact the plane was delayed for 2 hours), what do you do? You look around the shops!

Last month when Laurent and I was on our way back from Melbourne, we stopped at Telstra shop inside Melbourne's airport. Initially we were interested in Foxtel (to Don: it's a satellite/cable TV service (i.e. paid TV) in Australia). Telstra also sells Foxtel since Telstra owns something like 50% of it.

Anyhow, we were cheap to get the paid TV (to Don: Antony is poor.) and we changed our focus to T-Box.

Telstra T-Box

So what is T-Box? In short, it is a digital TV recorder combined with TV guide (fed from internet) and series recording, plus five free T-Box channels (fed from internet). Of course, you can pay additional for movie rentals. It is similar to the very popular and very well known TiVo in Don's United States of America.

The best part of it, it costs us only $35 (one-off), and the content download in unmetered since we are a Telstra BigPond customer (combined with our landline service).

Why do we need another TV recorder? There are times when we need to recode two channels at the same time. Both PlayTV for PlayStation 3 and T-Box can only record one free-to-air channel at a time.

I can sense that Don would argue that I could record TV on my Mac, correct, however, watching the TV show on my Mac (with small screen) and sitting on office chair is not as enjoyable as watching the TV on a proper Sony TV and sitting on the couch. All those other factors count.

Another reason that we got Telstra T-Box, Foxtel will come to T-Box, scheduled this month.

Well, the T-Box itself is bulky and ugly, particularly when I put it next to Apple TV. The good thing is that T-Box uses Bluetooth remote control, which means I can hide it somewhere. It is easier to use than PlayTV for PlayStation 3 at very least.

(to Don: Antony is poor.)
