Australians support US economy and retailers' dirty tactics

When the Australian dollar is strong (compared to Don's US dollar), products from USA becomes a lot cheaper than the same product getting from Australian retailers, even factoring in international shipping cost. Most bargain hunters (including the poor Antony) would of course do more shopping online (from oversea shops).

In early November, I mentioned the rich 'Alliance of Australian Retailers' wanted the government to charge duty and GST on goods purchases overseas. Just before Christmas, I saw the spokewoman on Channel 7's Sunrise begging Australians to shop at Australian retailers instead of online shopping. At that time, I told myself, she was the one wanting the government to put on GST on overseas items (translation: public enemy), and why shall we listen to her?

And yesterday I finally read their newspaper advertisement for the first time myself. The advertisement is simply ridiculous. They are just making a little bit less compared to previous years, and they are making a big whinge.

Further, Australian retailers would rush to increase the prices when the Australian dollar goes down a bit, but extremely hesitate on dropping the prices when the Australian dollar goes up. Of course, they always have their excuses.

Without a doubt, consumers don't buy their excuses. And this article analyzed nicely (including many reader comments). Also, Astroturfing: Itís what the big retailers do to get their way is a good read.

My saying: before they get the Government into their way, continue to support Don's American economy!

All has been sorted out now Antony. Gerry Harvey has been painted as a buffoon, and now all is right with the world of retail, and you may now worship at its altar to your heart's content!

It was after he labelled Australians trying to save some money by shopping from oversea online stores "unAustralian". Without a doubt, the advertisement was over exaggerated threat and a crude way to force Government into their way.
Translation: To be "Australian", you should make Gerry Harvey and his fellow billionaire bosses richer.
