the Express

I got my first AirPort Express in July 2004. Time flies. I used it mainly as a Wi-Fi router. Back then, it was only 802.11g speed. I of course use its AirTunes feature to stream music from iTunes to connected speakers. I then sold them in early 2007.

Since then, 802.11n is the new Wi-Fi standard. The AirTunes can now be controlled by Remote (iPhone/iPad app), I thought it might be a good idea have AirPort Express again to hook them up to cheap stereo. The good part? Santa granted my wish.

AirPort Express

And to Don, it was the second and final item from the Apple Signature Gift Box.

from iTunes Store:
Wow, more gadgets from your favorite brand, Apple!

It is a gadget that does the functions we need. Again, you focused too much into the brand.

Again, you focused too much on the brand, as Apple was your first and last choice for such a product.

The AirPort Express does exactly what we want, it was not because it is Apple.

Knowing you, the AirPort Express does exactly what you want because it's made by Apple, instead of buying the Apple device because it does what you want.

There's no suitable non-Apple device that can stream music from iTunes to any room.
Posted by Antony on 11 January 2011 3:14 PM.
Well, that's what happens when you commit to a closed, proprietary system.
Posted by Don_HH2K on 13 January 2011 1:55 AM.
The AirPlay is open now, except no third party products available yet.
Posted by Antony on 13 January 2011 6:38 AM.
From what I just read, it appears that the standard is still closed and proprietary, and that Apple is simply licensing the technology to a select few vendors. In other words, you are still limited to Apple's choice.

No, it means the products carries the logo are to the high standard and quality you can trust.
Posted by Antony on 19 January 2011 4:37 PM.
What's saying anyone else couldn't create the same high-quality products, given the know-how to do it like those big brand names are?
Posted by Don_HH2K on 20 January 2011 7:49 AM.
The usage for "AirPlay" logo indicates passing the requirement and meets the high standard, without a doubt, guaranteed compatibility.
Of course there are companies making compatible devices (but likely inferior quality) without gaining the logo.
Posted by Antony on 20 January 2011 2:03 PM.
So you are trying to tell me that a discriminatory sticker makes a quality difference, just because some can afford certification and some cannot?
Posted by Don_HH2K on 20 January 2011 4:57 PM.
The logo/certification indicates a lot, compatibility is one of the things.
It is not only your Microsoft certification counts.
Posted by Antony on 20 January 2011 10:29 PM.
What's saying that any brand name's discriminatory certification logo is the final word on compatibility?
I never once mentioned Microsoft, nor do I believe that I own anything Microsoft-certified save for my laptop which is "Designed for Windows XP / Windows Vista Capable", which is just an advertisement and not really a certification nowadays.
Posted by Don_HH2K on 21 January 2011 1:42 AM.
The logo/badge represents a number of things, compatibility is one of the major thing. Just like your beloved "Compatible with Windows 7" logo you look for.
Posted by Antony on 21 January 2011 1:56 AM.
First, it is not "my beloved" logo, I could really care less about compatibility stickers. Remember, for the first week or two I was using my then-new laptop without sound drivers due to incompatibilities that HP hadn't fixed yet, and it wasn't that big a deal, I just used a CD player for music instead.
Second, as I said before, that Windows 7 compatibility logo is more just an advertisement for Microsoft now than an actual certification, since nearly anything on the market will pass certification.
Posted by Don_HH2K on 21 January 2011 5:16 AM.
Of course almost every product is going to be compatible with Windows 7.
Unlike your beloved Microsoft, Apple has very tiny market share, and because of that, they need to ensure products that claim to be compatible are actually compatible.
