how do you get more people to use the public transport?

M10 WiFi Hotspot

NSW Government has a new idea on encourage people to use public transport instead of driving to city. How? Provide free Wi-Fi connection on the bus. (Making it more like Don's beautiful Boston where free Wi-Fi is easily available in many places.)

Laurent told me he saw the sign on M10 (Metro 10) bus on Thursday, and yesterday (Friday) Seven News reported it. The M10 Metrobus is the state's first to be fitted with wireless internet. Passengers can hook up with the free Wi-Fi for free. (to Don: we don't have many free Wi-Fi hotspots) During the 6-month trial, passengers can use two 45-minute sessions each day, with 30 megabytes of downloads available. And the best part, M10 passes through my place.

As a mater of fact, in the past six-month, the free Wi-Fi was already used on Manly ferry. The next challenge will be trains.

Well, what the Government did not say was... bus fares have been increasing a lot recently, the buses are overcrowded (during peak hours), and we don't even have a Tcard yet (something like beautiful Boston's contactless tickets). Those more fundamental issues are not being solved or focused, but well, the government is happy to advertise the Wi-Fi.

You are not qualified to make the statement that Boston has Wi-Fi hotspots all over the place, and I can personally attest to your statement being false.

Of course I was not talking about the 100% excellent coverage in every single square metres (or square feet). Just search "free WiFi Boston", you would get a number of lists that covers a very very huge percentage of beautiful Boston. Free WiFi can hardly be spotted in Sydney.

Then the obvious conclusion to make is that, since there's no market for free Wi-Fi in Sydney, you guys must all have mobile data services, which are prohibitively expensive.

What obvious conclusion? You got it wrong way round.
We had to get mobile broadband (or 3G) because there's hardly any free WiFi spots around.
