Once you got cable, you can't go back

Once you go cable you'll never want to go back to ADSL.

Like Mandrake at SillyDog701 Message Centre said, BigPond Cable is much faster than ADSL 2.

So, this is my setup:
Motorola Cable Modern
Photo above shown two of my AirPort Extreme Base Stations. From left to right: AirPort Extreme (Gigabit Ethernet), Motorola SB5105i, AirPort Extreme (Simultaneous Dual-Band II)

Some of you may know that on Tuesday, I waited whole afternoon and no technicians showed up. They showed up today and spent about 2 hours to get it installed and working. This house used to have Optus cable (already disconnected), and the technicians re-used the holes drilled by the Optus cable. That was a very smart thing to do.

Then, after the technicians left, I, of course, had to relocate the cable modem to a better location, as well as adding the very important surge protection (to both power and cable). Then, I realised that I couldn't get any internet connection at all. After 45 minutes with BigPond support line, they couldn't solve anything, then about 2 minutes after the call, I managed to fixed all the connection issues. (The technical support is a bit hopeless as many Whirlpool users complained.)

The installation of BigPond Cable did not go trouble-free, but it is all resolved now.

Well, Telstra initially wanted to supply wireless router modem, I opt for 1-port modem, why? I already have 3 AirPort Extreme Base Stations and 1 Time Capsule (Base Station). I know how to manage my wireless network here.

To ensure the reliable of BigPond Cable connection, I will keep the ADSL 2 with iiNet for a week or so, to ensure that we do not lost the very important internet connection.

As for the cost, it costs us virtually nothing, and as a matter of fact, it saves us money. How?
I signed up for the Telstra's HomeLine Ultimate (100GB) plan, the monthly fee for the plan is about the same amount we pay for telephone line per month, on top of that, we got BigPond Cable (at no extra cost). Because of this plan, the installation is also free. Once I cancel the ADSL 2 (with iiNet), it will save us the cost of ADSL 2 monthly fee. Therefore, it's a win-win for switching to BigPond Cable.

The speed test:

As for the speed, it is fast, just not as fast as Mandrake's. Perhaps too many people using at the same time, or at the time of measure, I have quite a few devices connected, or perhaps due to the additional surge protector I used. (Surge protection is very very important.) Still, I am very content.

Well, the cable is still not as fast as Don's superfast internet connection, but it is closer to Don's normal speed. After all, it is hard to compete in technologies against Don when you don't live in the very advanced America like Don does. Unlike Don, I always settle for second best.

Glad to hear you are all settled in and the set-up is all go!

I have told you time and time again that I am financially forced to settle for second best time and time again.
Congrats on the superfast Internet connection nonetheless!

Thank you Rev. Dr. Wu Yi. Somehow I feel my internet is a bit faster than yours.
Thank you Don. Except you have very fast and very cheap (compared to us) internet connection! Also, my connection is not superfast.

Your new connection is much faster than the 6m down / 768k up cable service that we get at home. So was your old DSL connection, if I'm not mistaken.

My previous internet connection is nowhere fast as yours. Although the theoretical maximum speed is fast, but I don't live within 1km of the telephone exchange. Hence, it was pretty slow particularly during peak times. I just measured the speed (during off-peak hours): 5.87 Mb/s (down) and 0.60 Mb/s (up). Note: this would be the maximum speed I could get.

So you are assuming that we always get the maximum bandwidth, all the time, even though you don't/didn't either?

Well, Boston has world's leading technologies, and RIT has superfast internet!
