presenting a poor man's Mac Pro and LED Cinema Display

It has been almost four years since I use my slow iMac (24-inch, 2.33 Core 2 Duo) as the main computer. It is about time to upgrade. According to my blog entry, it was just 5 days short of 4 years.

The first brown box arrived on Tuesday, and the second (main) box arrived yesterday. I patiently waited for the main box to arrive before I open the first brown box.

Two boxes

(as usual, more photos follow...)

Before I open up the two heavy boxes (weigh 13 kg and 28 kg), I decided to take a photo of my current, well, I meant, the "before" setup.

Please excuse the messiness of my tiny office. Unlike Don, I don't have a huge office.

The “Before” photo:

Why did I choose Mac Pro instead of an iMac? Simple, I followed Don's longevity purchasing strategy. As well as Don's very important decision factor - the machine comes with options for expanding.

Here are some box shots.
My small display:
27-inch LED Cinema Display (box shot)

And the main machine:
Mac Pro (box shot)

About This MacSomehow, I have a feeling that Don would be very interested in the specs. So here it is, the Mac Pro is the lowest model of the 12-Core options. (To Don: Antony is poor!) The only changes on the main machine's configuration I made was upgrading the graphic card from ATI Radeon HD 5770 to ATI Radeon HD 5870.

Quick specifications:
Two 2.66GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” (12 cores),
6GB 1333MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM,
1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA hard drive,
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB,
One 18x SuperDrive.

And of course, the “After” photo. Again, please excuse the messiness of my tiny office. I will re-arrange the cables within the next few days.

Comparing to any of my other Macs, this Mac Pro is really fast! And the 27-inch LED Cinema Display is really a beauty.

Upgrading RAM and adding more HDDs will be my next task.

(to Don: Antony is poor.)

Congratulations on the Mac Pro! So I guess this makes four computers that you've bought in the time I've bought one?

What four?

In June 2006 I bought my HP laptop. Since then you've bought a Mac Pro, a Mac mini, a MacBook Pro, and an iMac, and I've bought no computers.

You remember the Macs I bought well. You bought a BMW at very least, remember?
The poor Antony still does not own a car.

Looks like a nice set up Antony, and your "office" looks reasonably tidy. DON, by the way, doesn't have an office at all!! I think he must be "poor"?

Thank you.
Actually Don has a bigger office, with computers/gadgets setting up like a control room. You can ask Don for the photo.

That's my bedroom. Unlike you, I DON'T have a separate office and bedroom, I have to combine the two. Your office + bedroom space is much larger than my combined space.

Well, you have a nice comfy bed in your 'bedroom', I only have a small sofa in my 'office' which is not that comfy if I decide to lay down on it.
And back to the topic, you have more computers/gadgets than I do.

There was nothing wrong with that iMac! I bought one the same time as you and mine is still going strong :/

Except you don't have to sleep on that sofa. Also, wow! You have a sofa for guests in your office! I don't, and you can't see the monitors from the bed.

哇,你真的買下去!

Congratulations Antony. Hope it pulls through strong.
