random breath test, greedy government?

For the last two days, there had been police breath mobile random breath testing units taking motorists passing through the house. Those units were for 'officially' targeting drink drivings, however, most people with common sense would know that they were working under pressure from local government - those police had to meet the quota!

Anyhow, the point of this entry is... how random are they? Well, as 'random' as airport's security check. At airport's security point, it is well known that people who are not white or not Caucasian would far more likely be targeted for all sorts of so called 'random' checks. That said, they also pick a few unlucky whites to cover up their racial profiling act, a.k.a. racist act.

I have spent some time observing the police hailing down cars for 'random' breath analysis. Like I said earlier, it's really like the checking at airports... a certain type of car is highly targeted.

Yes, that's right, if you are driving a small car or a family car, chances are you will be called for so called 'random' breath test. Further discovery: during heavy traffic, it seems like police only targeting small/family cars, with a few 4WD's (SUV's) to cover up their discrimination. When in less traffic time, 4WD's (SUV's) start to get picked up by the police (still much lower than small/family cars). Even less traffic? They start to check a few small delivery vans.

The morale of the story: drive a large car or a van if you want to have some drink.

Remember: if you were being called by any police (or any person in police-like uniform), you have the right to request to see the identification first.
