Google Australia breached Australian laws, no punishments

Some real stories for our good friend Don in beautiful Boston.

Google Australia has been found to breach Australian Privacy Act for its collecting of personal data with Street View service. Well, after all, Google is an America based company, not many countries dare to punish American companies or even American citizens.

A well known example was an American citizen Michael P. Fay who decided to vandalise cars as well as stealing road signs in Singapore in 1993. The sentence included six strokes of cane. Without a doubt, the American media was focused on how dare a small Asian country caning an American citizen. The very powerful U.S. senators and then US President Bill Clinton were involved. The sentence was eventually lightened for this American citizen.

A few months ago, a Swiss street defacing artist, Oliver Fricker, decided to deface Singapore's public transport. His sentence included three strokes of the cane. And to best of my knowledge, unlike the American Government, the Swiss Government has yet stepped in on other country's juridical systems.

The morals of these (true) stories: for the same crime conducted in a foreign country, Americans do not receive the same punishment. No wonder millions of people in the world wish to become Americans.

An American is currently in gaol in Singapore for some detention, and will also get 3 strokes of the cane for writing graffiti on a train. I think your supposition is wrong.

Rev. Dr., I guess you forgot to read the second part, the recent street defacing artist is of Swiss nationality, not American.

Sorry, for some reason I thought it was a US citizen.
Usually nice Swiss people would never do such things...LOL!!

Back to my points: Americans are lucky, they can get off laws easily.
As within United States, according to a statistic, if you were good looking or white, for similar crimes, you will be sentenced to the lighter end compared to those not good looking or dark skinned guys.

Since Antony wanted to make it seem like Michael Fay got out without punishment, I would like to point out that his sentence was reduced from six to four strokes of the cane - the fine and jailtime still stood. I would not really call that "get[ting] off laws easily." Furthermore, a Hong Kong native involved (though questionably) had his sentence reduced as well, from twelve canings to six.

I did say "The sentence was eventually lightened". In comparison to the majority of non-American Singaporeans, it was still better off simple because Michael P Fay is an American citizen.
