Google Australia breached Australian laws, no punishments
Some real stories for our good friend Don in beautiful Boston.
Google Australia has been found to breach Australian Privacy Act for its collecting of personal data with Street View service. Well, after all, Google is an America based company, not many countries dare to punish American companies or even American citizens.
A well known example was an American citizen Michael P. Fay who decided to vandalise cars as well as stealing road signs in Singapore in 1993. The sentence included six strokes of cane. Without a doubt, the American media was focused on how dare a small Asian country caning an American citizen. The very powerful U.S. senators and then US President Bill Clinton were involved. The sentence was eventually lightened for this American citizen.
A few months ago, a Swiss street defacing artist, Oliver Fricker, decided to deface Singapore's public transport. His sentence included three strokes of the cane. And to best of my knowledge, unlike the American Government, the Swiss Government has yet stepped in on other country's juridical systems.
The morals of these (true) stories: for the same crime conducted in a foreign country, Americans do not receive the same punishment. No wonder millions of people in the world wish to become Americans.
