government said iiNet welcome the filter , iiNet denied

Our good friend Don in beautiful Boston, picturesque Quincy has been following much closer than I do in Australia government's internet filtering.

iiNetThe news that caught my attention was this one: Senator Conroy said that his China-firewall style internet filtering is supported by major internet service providers including iiNet. Except, iiNet never supported so, and has always been opposing it.

The company said its position on the Government's web filtering policy had not changed since January, when it warned the plan would not be effective and could give parents a false sense of security.

"Let's be clear. We don't support the Government's proposal. We never have," iiNet chief regulatory officer Steve Dalby said in an open letter at the time.

I've been with iiNet for many years, and I am pretty happy with their service. The speed is not as fast as the broadband in the States, and the ADSL2 speed degrades with the weather. Well, that's life here.

News source: Don't claim we support filter, iiNet tells Conroy (news.com.au)

Antony what are your speeds? With my broadband in Red Creek I get 22mbs down, and 0.34mbs up. In Pulaski, with DSL I get about 2mbs down and .13mbs up. And at least here in Red Creek, just the slightest wind knocks out the power and cable, so it's not just in Australia that you have problems with weather.

Yeah all of the parental controls coming out now are somewhat scary. Like the new Ipad for instance will not allow you to access content that it deems to be inappropriate. IMO that is not right. The last thing I want to have to deal with after I buy a new device is find out that I cannot use it to access certain publications. We all need to be aware of the first amendment rights and what that means to us and our society.
