Earth Hour 2010 is extremism

earthhour2000.jpg

Earth Hour is on again this Saturday, with an extreme theme that keeps extremists extremely happy - ‘Every Hour’.

Since the first time it started in 2007, I knew there would be extremists (or they prefer to be called activists) suggesting there should be Earth Hour everyday, and I saw those people being interviewed by TV news.

The Earth Hour organisation seems to be gone extreme this time. They asked for unbelievable ‘Every Hour’.

Besides Sydney is getting hotter every year, I do understand the undesirable impact of global climate change. However, I am not an extremist and I won't do things in such extreme measure. I would do my part on reducing energy consumption for that particular hour. Some lights will still be on around the house (unless power cut) for safety and security reasons. Appliances that run 24/7 won't get switched off just for that hour.

As I mentioned before, the ultimate solution is to generate zero pollution and more efficient electricity, while all appliances and gadgets should also be energy efficient.

Better yet, you can get powerful, stylish and enviro-conscious designed products from Apple Inc.

green AppleApple is once again leading the industry by reducing the environmental impacts including removing toxic chemicals, highly recyclable materials, making safer batteries, reducing packaging waste, and designing highly energy efficient devices. The new Mac desktops and laptops use PVC-free internal cables and components and contains no brominated flame retardants. The new Mac desktops achieve EPEAT Gold status. For more detail about Apple's commitment to the environment, please visit Apple and Environment page.

Earth hour is on this Saturday, 27th March 2010, 8.30pm your local time. Everybody is welcome to participate it.

I even know some people that deny the whole idea of "climate change" and "energy crisis" and say that is all politics. Yet that seems even more sensible than admitting that there is a problem, and saying the solution is to buy Apple products.

I forgot to add that our friend Don goes through some extreme measures to save energy (in beautiful Boston). Instead of using energy saving light bulbs, he uses the extreme low energy - LED light bulbs.

I got them on eBay for roughly same price as fluorescent bulbs, and figured it was worth a try. What's so fundamentally wrong with that, like you make it seem?
(Well, they aren't ready for mainstream use yet; if I had the chance again I wouldn't have bought them.)

I did not say buying Apple products is the solution, however, I did say that getting highly energy efficient and environmentally friendly products is the way to go. Apple products, lead by formal US Vice President who is well known for his push on reducing the climate change, are well known for leading on environmental concerns.
It was not fundamentally wrong at all, just a bit extreme. Perhaps you did not use the good quality LED bulbs that cost $29 a bulb.

So how come when I buy a cheapo LED light bulb it's "extremism", but when you buy an Apple product it's "doing my part for the environment" or similar?
