very expensive pumpkins

Can you believe, a pumpkin is cost AU$25?

Yes, that's right. If you live in certain suburbs (i.e. high class areas), you can buy one (1) Halloween Pumpkin for AU$25 in Woolworths supermarkets.

Laurent and I stopped in Woolworths in Crows Nest the other day, and I can't stop noticing the AU$25 price tag for just ONE pumpkin. To be fair, it's a special type of pumpkin, big and round, very suitable for the American Halloween holiday. I checked the local Woolworths supermarket today, they don't have any Halloween Pumpkins. It is well known that even the same supermarket would have different pricing and sometimes different quality of the same good according to different postcodes (or ZIP codes for Americans). (to Don: Clearly, we don't live in high class area.)

The regular (not the big round ones) pumpkins cost about 99c to A$1.59 per kg in the local green grocer. And the large ones weight about 3.5kg (as I measured them), they are nowhere as large as Halloween Pumpkins. The Halloween Pumpkin would weight about 8kg I'd say, but still, at AU$25 price tag? And the Halloween Pumpkin are unprepared.

There's something cheap in Woolworths supermarkets this week, watermelons for only 75 cents a kilo. Remember the $2.00 a slice of watermelon in Italian Festa I mentioned last year? I could not afford $2.00 for just one slice of watermelon.

It seems to me that Americans are quite rich for buying expensive pumpkins. I decided to ask the question in the forum. If you know the pumpkin price in America, please let me know.

BTW, Halloween is not officially celebrated/observed in Australia.

(to Don: Antony is poor.)

Hi, I just ran across your website after searching for pumpkins in Australia. I saw a Woolie's commercial the other day about Halloween pumpkins, and being an American I miss celebrating the spooky holiday! However, I can't believe the absurd prices here for a Halloween pumpkin!! In the states they're relatively cheap - about $6 a pumpkin and even cheaper when it's closer to the holiday.

Pumpkins are maybe $3 - $4 each here in rural New England.
