Last week's Mary Alice Young quote:
“At 5:15 that afternoon, Edie Williams began calling her friends to inform them that her husband had come home.
Sadly, she never got through to any of them.
Gabrielle never picked up.
She was too busy watching her children being told they had to obey their mother...
and trying not to smile.
Lynette wasn't home when Edie called.
She was with her mother, laughing and sharing stories about the old days...
and enjoying every minute of it.
Bree was outside showing her future son-in-law colour samples for the home she had bought him...
and smiling politely when they disagreed.
And Susan -
Well, she did not answer, because she was sitting in her favourite chair with a cup of tea...
Learning to enjoy, for the first time in her life, what it was like to be alone.”
Last time on Desperate Housewives, (Season 5 episode 12, Connect! Connect!):
Edie summons her friends over to sympathize with her over kicking Dave out, but Susan, who thinks she's being helpful by saying Edie can help her move, steals her thunder by announcing she's moving to Riverton to be with Jackson.
Later, the two accidentally get locked in Edie's basement. During the hours they're stuck together, Edie suggests that Susan is never without a man, and charts Susan's entire dating life to prove her point. "Maybe I do feel incomplete without a man, but I wouldn't trade places with you for anything. It's the way you are with men. You use one and toss it away and it's on to the next one. At least I'm looking for something real." Edie insists, "I know what men are really like," and relates how her father left her and her mother when she was young -- and took all her beloved horse figurines to give to his girlfriend's daughter. Susan gives Edie a hug and says she's misjudged her, and Edie slaps her. When they're finally freed, Edie asks her not to say anything, or she'll kill her. "I wasn't planning to," Susan says.
Gabrielle is at her wit's end trying to get her girls to obey her with Carlos out of town. When she asks why they are good for Carlos and not for her, Juanita answers, "Because I love Daddy more." Gaby steps outside for a private cry and gets some unexpected advice from a passing stranger about instilling fear in her children. Gabrielle promptly invites him in to order the kids to put their toys away. "Word got out that you were disobeying, so they sent Reggie over," Gaby explains, claiming that it was Carlos who sent him.
Carlos isn't happy about the arrangement when he gets home and tells Gabrielle that when he was in charge, the girls told him they loved her more. "I just wanted us to have a normal life," she protests when he says he doesn't have time to discipline the girls. "Dad's unhappy at work, mom's home with the screaming kids. You got one!"
Lynette finds out where Porter's been hiding out...at her mother's nursing home. But Porter is already gone by the time Lynette goes to bring him home and Stella is not about to tell her where he is. "Sucks to feel powerless, doesn't it?" she says, still bitter about Lynette putting her in the home. But Stella and Porter both show at the hospital when they hear that Lynette's been in a serious accident, although it's just clever ploy to get Porter out of hiding. Porter agrees to see the judge, who throws out the case against him for lack of evidence. Lynette explains to Stella that she had no choice but to put her in a home, because of her out-of-control drinking. She promises to visit more often if Stella can let go of her anger and Stella agrees, saying, "Get my flask and we can talk," explaining, "Hey, I can't be nice, forgiving and sober all at the same time."
Bree is shocked when Alex asks her not to put down Orson in front of him, since it was that kind of emasculation that drove his father to leave his mother. Orson admits that Alex was rude to say something, but doesn't disagree with his point. A barbecue turns ugly when Bree pointedly doesn't give an opinion on Orson's burnt steaks because it "might upset someone." She scolds Alex, saying he should show her some gratitude for buying him and Andrew the house and Alex leaves, saying she can keep it. When she appeals to Andrew to address Alex's "absurd overreaction," saying Alex won't listen to her, Andrew snaps, "Don't you mean obey?" He points out that Alex isn't one of her employees.
The next day, Alex tells Bree that he's declining the house, as living next to each other would be a disaster. Bree confides something she's never told anyone else. "I know that I've changed since my business took off, but I didn't want to admit it. I was never the type to suffer fools gladly but now I seem to find fools everywhere and I don't want to be that way. I need someone who isn't afraid to call me out when I cross those lines and I would love it if you would be that person." Alex accepts the house key and the carte blanche to criticize his mother-in-law.
Through flashback, we see how Dave had a nervous breakdown after his wife and daughter were killed in an accident and how he met Edie shortly after getting out of a mental institution. Luck seemed to be with him, as she lived in the same town as the man he blames for losing his family, but Dave''s plans seem to have fallen through now that Edie's kicked him out. His plan is back on when Mike invites him to stay at his house, saying he owes him his life. While there, Dave overhears Katherine ask for Mike's thoughts on whether she should move to be closer to her daughter. When Mike is noncommittal, Katherine skips a get-together that night. Dave asks whether Mike might still be hung up on Susan and Mike admits that he's falling for Katherine. Dave urges him to tell her that, so Mike sends her a bouquet of flowers with the note, "Don't go."
Edie asks Dave to move back in, saying that whatever he's going through, they can work it out together. Meanwhile, Susan calls Jackson to say, "We need to talk about this move."
