14 April, 2009extremist's ban on plastic bagsSouth Australia (S.A.) will be the first state in the nation to ban plastic shopping bags starting 4th May 2009. Okay, we all know that plastic shopping bags are not good for the environment, but a dramatic approach under the "environmentally-friendly plan" umbrella (read: excuse) with a threat - a hefty $20,000 fine - is just too extreme. Perhaps our friends of open-source extremists like this approach. One commenter said nicely, “They should look at the alternatives, such as biodegradable plastic bags before introducing new legislation”. South Australia's plastic shopping bag ban to introduce heavy fines (news.com.au, 12 April 2009): The environmentally-friendly plan, starting on May 4, is backed up by steep penalties for businesses caught distributing the wrong type of plastic bag. For the reference, South Australia is the only state in Australia that runs 5c refund for each drink can/bottle. Further, shoppers are NOT being awarded for trying to be “environmentally friendly”. A few shops charges 5 to 10 cents for getting a plastic bag to carry the purchased goods home, and a many shops have a sign saying something like saving the environment and asking you to buy a green reusable bag for 99 cents or more. If anything, it would've been profitable for a subsidy to be issued to the shops, so that they could spend a few days handing out the green reusable bags for free or at greatly reduced costs. Choking off the bag supply all at once will just be a nuisance for everyone that uses plastic.
I use an old backpack to get things home from stores. Usually I'll ask if I can use my own bag, though some stores force you to take their plastic bags to prove that you've gone through the checkout. Posted by Don_HH2K on 15 April 2009 1:53 AM.
Good points. Companies do give away free green bags, for promotion purposes.
At checkout, I always ask for plastic shopping bags when asked. It makes me easier to go to another shops, as I don't make my own bag bulge, or another bag over stuffed... looks like that I stole some products from a shop. Posted by Antony Shen on 15 April 2009 2:17 AM.
I don't really mind my bag looking bulged or overstuffed. It always looks like that anyway from hauling home 20kg of books and other stuff.
(And before you make any racially suggestive conclusions about yourself, yes, I am treated suspiciously for that.) Posted by Don_HH2K on 15 April 2009 12:31 PM.
Do you guys have bag check policy in Boston?
You carry 20kg of books everyday? wow! Posted by Antony Shen on 15 April 2009 12:37 PM.
I've had my bag inspected a few times by subway police, if that's what you mean.
Posted by Don_HH2K on 15 April 2009 1:36 PM.
No. The time when you walk out of the shop, a salesperson or security asks you to open your bag for him/her for checking if you have stolen any items.
Lucky you, living in beautiful Boston, you don't get assumed to be a thief when walking out of a shop. Posted by Antony Shen on 15 April 2009 1:47 PM.
And what makes you assume that I don't get followed around the store by employees assuming that I am a thief?
Posted by Don_HH2K on 15 April 2009 3:28 PM.
Easy. You are a white American. You don't get assumed to be a thief by default.

Unfortunately there is some problem with your argument, because yes, people do assume me to be a thief. That's why I get followed around by store employees.

If you were black, then I can understand the feeling of being assumed to be a thief all the time. However, you are white, remember?
Shop assistants treat white and non-white people differently, that has been reported by Today Tonight. Posted by Antony Shen on 16 April 2009 8:57 AM.
Still believing everything you hear on TV, I see.

I told you a number of times that white Americans receive first class treatment, from not just shops, taxi drivers, but also governments. Lucky you.
Posted by Antony on 16 April 2009 11:41 AM.
And I assume if somebody on TV told you the opposite, you would believe that.
