very green new Apple desktops

Today's big news - new Mac Pro, new iMac, and new Mac mini.

The new Apple desktops do not feature clock speed bump, however, new improved designed, energy efficient and the greenest Mac Pro, iMac and Mac mini ever!

Mac Pro features Intel's new “Nehalem” Xeon processors, supporting up to 32GB of 1066MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM. The price starts at US$2,499. The new iMac supports up to 8GB of 1066MHz DDR3 memory. The price starts at US$1,199. The new Mac mini features 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 memory support, Gigabit ethernet, 802.11n and FireWire 800 port. The price starts at US$599. All of them have new powerful graphic processors as well as Mini DisplayPort.

The Australian prices are:
Mac Pro starts at A$4,499.00,
iMac starts at A$1,999.00,
Mac mini starts at A$1,049.00.

Just for the reference, back in January, I posted an entry on the upcoming Mac mini, it turns out that my source was 100% accurate. Sorry, I cannot reveal where I got it from.

Now, my current iMac (24-inch, Intel 2.33GHz, 3GB RAM) bought in November 2006 seems to be getting old. I think I really need a new Mac, however, it is still under AppleCare Protection Plan. I think I shall wait until the warranty runs out before getting a new one.

Laurent has been using my 12-inch PowerBook G4 (PowerPC G4 1.33GHz, 1.25GB RAM) bought in May 2004. The PowerBook G4 is getting a bit slow nowadays. I think I need to replace that PowerBook G4 with a Mac mini.

What are your recommendations, Don?

For the reference, the PowerBook G4's hard disk failed once, however, it was replaced under warranty. I, of course, sent it back for warranty service. The warranty replacement was very smooth, did not take very long. I would also rate Apple's warranty service very good, just like I rated for Sony's.

green AppleApple is once again leading the industry by reducing the environmental impacts including removing toxic chemicals, highly recyclable materials, making safer batteries, reducing packaging waste, and designing highly energy efficient devices. The new Mac desktops use PVC-free internal cables and components and contains no brominated flame retardants. The new Mac desktops achieve EPEAT Gold status. from iTunes Store:
You bought your iMac almost half a year after I bought my laptop, and I don't call my laptop "old".
Personally I would get something like the 13.3" Asus F6 to replace your old Powerbook. Or (since you're thinking of a Mac mini) if you don't mind a desktop, you can get a Lenovo with a 2.5GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB of DDR3, 500GB hard drive, and a Blu-ray drive for $589.

Not really thinking about getting another laptop to replace PowerBook G4. But since the PowerBook G4 has been used as a desktop, I think it is about time to find a replacement. A compact desktop such as Mac mini seems to be the perfect option.

If space is a concern, it looks like Asus has some cool-looking booksize barebones kits that may be a good fit.
