24 January, 2009a Pizza Hut is closed for goodI noticed this sign when I was in Devonport (Tasmania). Sadly, a business is shutting down. And, this won't be listed on Engrish.com website for a simple reason: the sign was not posted in Japan or China.
This photo simply won't go onto the arrogant native English speakers' favourite Engrish.com website, a website dedicated to poke fun and make a big fuss on some Asian's not-so-perfect English. Please continue reading. Before mentioning why I took the photo, I think it is important to mention a bit about Engrish.com. Engrish.com is well known for targeting Asian's non-perfect English. I believe it is safe to say that Asian languages do not share many similarities as European languages with English. And for many Asians, the sounds "r" and "l" may be hard to distinguish. It is true that not all Asians were well educated in English speaking environment or have opportunity to master English. And their broken English is without a doubt a big joke for arrogant native English speakers' favourite Engrish.com website. Here's the enlarged portion of the sign (colour is also slightly adjusted): Even the non-English speaking Antony can spot three spelling mistakes in two sentences. (to Don and everybody else: Antony does not speak English.) Again, people in Asia tried very hard to provide signs for English speakers, occasionally, people who made the signs do not speak perfect English, or simply do not have enough resource or time to have the English translations verified. The result is something being referred to as “Chinglish” where they simply translate word by word without following proper sentence structure and in many cases, not the best choice of words. Arrogant native English speakers at Engrish.com showed absolutely no appreciations to those tried to provide information (in signs) for English speakers. If you dig down in Engrish.com, you will find a number of photos featured there showed no spelling errors and no grammar mistakes. A few photos are not even English (or any language) related, but all featured there for one simple reason: they are not English speakers nor westerners. Would Engrish.com make similar fun on non-Asian's less-than-acceptable English? I highly doubt so. Simply they target Asians, Japanese and Chinese in particular. On the behalf of all those being insulted by Engrish.com site, it is my honour that my humble blog can mention something back on arrogant native English speakers' favourite Engrish.com website. Antony does not speak English. Related blog entries: more January 2009 blogs. (or 2009 blogs) from iTunes Store: ![]() comments
And yet, you still go on with that "Black Antony" crap. Perhaps we should start blackantony.com?

I did not mention a word about "black" in this blog entry.

As Rev. Dr. Wu Yi has done, and I should have done a long time ago, I refuse to say anything because I will most likely say something nasty.

hey, sorry this is completely off topic, but what color is the inside of your green crumpler considerable/dreadful embarrassment?
thanks! Posted by Tim on 25 January 2009 4:29 AM.
Actually S and Z are near each other, so it could have been a common typo, like 'teh'.

Tim,
Light brown. You can find the photos at http://www.crumpler.com.au/ website. Posted by Antony Shen on 25 January 2009 7:35 PM.
It seems like that some mistakes by white native English speakers are perfectly acceptable. However, English mistakes by Japanese or Chinese are automatically being the sources of big jokes for those arrogant white native English speakers.

If I'm not mistaken Linus Torvalds made a similar mistake in the readme file for an early kernel release (0.x) from the very early 90's.

Was that mistake being joked and/or insulted by Engrish.com or like sites?

No. He's finnish, and currently lives in Oregon.
