Christmas shopping

It is only September, and still at least 100 sleeps to Christmas. I am not sure if I shall put up the Christmas tree early this year not, as discount department stores like Big W has started selling Christmas items.

Without a doubt, the post Christmas bargain has not yet started. I did not have any lights on the Christmas tree last year, and I couldn't get any good Christmas lighting after last Christmas, so I bought one set today at Big W.

Christmas LED lights

It is the energy saving and long lasting LED light bulbs, I am sure Don would approve the extra $10 or so paid for LED version instead of regular ones. (to Don, Antony is poor, he can't afford LED in regular light bulbs.) In the past, I bought an LED lamp (from Freedom Furniture) and LED lighting strips for staircase (from IKEA) before. Neither are cheap, but the lamp only uses 2 watts of energy each and does not generate much heat. Also my MacBook Pro (acquired in March) uses LED backlid TFT display.

What shall I decorate the tree this year? I have no idea yet. But I will make it look better than last year's.

Congratulations on your new acquisition. I'm sure the power industry will applaud you and your carbon footprint will be smaller!!
Wait a moment, you will probably use the car more now to make up for that saving!!
How internationally minded you are!!

I was actually thinking of making my own LED light string this Christmas using a spare 5-volt power supply, along with 100-ohm resistors and 2.2-volt LEDs bought in bulk online, but it turned out that buying them preassembled was cheaper.

LED diodes were quite expensive. At least when I was in my undergraduate many many years ago.

I found a 100-pack of 100-ohm resistors for $10, and a 100-pack of LEDs for $50. Comparatively a string of 60 lights is just $30, and I wouldn't have to solder resistors and LEDs to stereo wire just to do it.

Our area (Gatlinburg Tn) has already set up their christmas decorations. I often wonder how much money could be saved if we decided not to do this just for a year..or at the very least switched over to energy saving lighting.
