the week it was, 14 September 2008

The regular weekly The Week It Was returns today. Blame Laurent for not able to post The Week It Was entry last week.

Peter Costello decided not to take over the Liberal leadership. Hurricane Ike is heading Texas after Cuba. The biggest scientific experiment in history did not result "the end of the world". Not yet at least. Here's the weekly The Week It Was. As usual, the clip is available in the usual H.264 format. Why do I use H.264 format? See this QuickTime codec comparison page and judge yourself.

Former Treasurer Peter Costello announced that he would not take over the Liberal leadership, although he is the most popular person for the Liberal party. Many were disappointed. Hurricane Ike passed Cuba killed 4, now at the coast of Texas. The Big Bang giant particle accelerator has gone online in Switzerland without a hitch. The scientists celebrated in a Proton party. The machine some feared that will trigger the end of the world finally switched on. What scientists wanted to do and know is the recreate the conditions in the universe moments after the big bang.

For those who like YouTube, here's YouTube version:

H.264QuickTime 7The video clip is encoded with state-of-the-art video codec H.264, which delivers stunning quality at remarkably low data rates. QuickTime Player 7 (free) is recommended for watching the video.

If the Large Hadron Collider were to end the world, it wouldn't have happened when it was turned on. The Collider isn't going to full power until some time in October; as of now, we're still operating at power levels already simulated on the collider at Fermilab in Texas.

After that, of course, anything is possible. Steven Hawking himself has bet 50 pounds that the Collider won't end anything.
