iPhone 3G is coming to Autralia, finally

iPhone 3GiPhone 3GApple announced the next generation iPhone yesterday morning, you can read more about iPhone 3G's features here or in Apple's iPhone website.

The important part, it will be available in Australia on 11th July. It will be available from Vodafone and Optus. Although, there are no published deals/prices for the iPhone 3G yet, it is highly likely that I will get one. And I will try to get one with Vodafone. Rumour also says that iPhone 3G in Australia will be available in unlocked mode.

The new iPhone 3G will have GPS built-in, supports 3G, UMTS/HSCPA, GSM, Wi-Fi and most importantly (for Don) it supports handwriting.

In the US, iPhone 3G is available for only US$199 for 8GB model, and US$299 for 16GB model.

Who doesn't want an iPhone?

Updated (2:06pm): Both Optus and Vodafone will offer iPhone outright without signing a contract. The costs of the iPhone and the plans have not been announced.

Both Optus and Vodafone – the first carriers to announce an iPhone offering – today confirmed they would offer the handset on a prepay plan, a key concern among the phone's target demographic.

Vodafone spokesman Greg Spears said customers would be able to buy an iPhone outright and purchase credit without being locked into a contract.

Features such as applications downloads, online synchronisation and email would be available on certain prepay plans, he said.

Both carriers have begun allowing customers to pre-register for an iPhone online and in retail stories.

Updated (12 June 2008): You can now register your interests of iPhone with Vadafone (AU) at http://iphone.vodafone.com.au/. Still, there's no official words on the cost.

You are sure living up to your "Wombania" image!!
I for one, do NOT want an iPhone!!

That makes two of us, Rev. Dr.

I wouldn't mind seeing an unlocked iPhone here in North America for use on T-Mobile's GSM network. AT&T's GSM network is terrible, and with the new Verizon deal it'd be impossible to jailbreak the phone, since Verizon's CDMA network doesn't use SIM cards, not to mention I couldn't take it out of the country and still call it a phone!

Shall I say, "For those who want a smart phone" instead?

I agree with Don and The Rev. here. While I like the concept of the iPhone, I'm not a fan of the device being hitched to only one buggy. Also Apple's attuide over the past year has left me a bit sour on it (I say this even though I own an iBook and two iPods!)

Ant is already locked in to his Nespresso coffee supplier,as he can only use the little pre-measured pellet things, and would you believe, he just bought the upgraded auto model of the same machine under the same coffee purchase monopoly? So I don't think being locked into restricted carriers for his soon to be purchased iPhone would bother him!
