presenting MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.5GHz)

Grumpy and MacBook Pro

As mentioned in previous entry, after a long wait, I finally received my MacBook Pro yesterday. I've been playing with it for a bit. The machine is simply amazing.

After using the 12-inch PowerBook G4 for almost 4 years. I finally catch with Don with a 64-bit laptop. (Don's 64-bit laptop). This 15-inch MacBook Pro is simply brilliant. A whole lot faster than the 12-inch PowerBook G4. Much better screen size for working on multiple windows at the same time.

(more on MacBook Pro and photos follow...)

MacBook Pro contentsMy 12-inch PowerBook G4 is a reliable laptop for the last 4 years. Its hard disk failed once, but replaced under Apple warranty. There has been no other issues with it. It still runs well, except a bit slow in today's standard. I have been very happy with it, except I usually found the screen of it is a bit small to work on, but the compactness of it makes it extremely portable. (It was the most portable laptop from Apple until the MacBook Air.

Size does matter. 27.7cm x 21.9cm x 3.0cm and 2.1kg for PowerBook G4 and 35.7cm x 24.3cm x 2.59cm and 2.45kg for MacBook Pro. Although the MacBook Pro (15-inch) is larger than the PowerBook G4 (12-inch), the package size of MacBook Pro is much thinner... saving the packaging waste.

I guess I haven't adjusted myself with the 15-inch MacBook Pro size. I still find the 15-inch MacBook Pro is a bit large (lucky, I did not get the 17-inch model).

The specs of the MacBook Pro I ordered:

  • 15-inch, 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 6MB L2 cache
  • 2GB (two SO-DIMMs) 667MHz DDR2 memory (PC2-5300), (I upgraded it to 4GB)
  • 15.4-inch (diagonal) antiglare widescreen TFT LED backlit display, native resolution: 1440 by 900.
  • NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 512MB of GDDR3 SDRAM and dual-link DVI
  • 200GB 7200-rpm drive (built-to-order version)
  • One FireWire 400, one FireWire 800, two USB 2.0 ports, and ExpressCard/34 slot
  • Built-in iSight camera, DVI, VGA
  • Combined optical digital input/audio line in, combined optical digital output/audio line out, stereo speakers, microphone
  • Built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T (Gigabit)
  • Built-in AirPort Extreme (802.11n); built-in Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR

Okay, this machine a little incy wincy teeny weeny bit faster than Don's 64-bit laptop. (to Don: I am poor.)

Together with this MacBook Pro, I also ordered:

My Grumpy approves this MacBook Pro, and he is very happy.
