MacBook Air has arrived in Australia

MacBook Air

MacBook Air has arrived in Australia yesterday. I saw the MacBook Air in Myer (Sydney CBD store) yesterday, and played one MacBook Air for a while. (They were still setting up the other one.)

My impression: wow!
It is really light weight! A really compact design yet packed with enough power without compromising too much. It is not as fast as MacBook Pros or even MacBooks. But still much faster than offerings from some sub-notebooks (PC).

Another great feature I noticed immediately was the glossy screen. It is far less reflective (than MacBook's)! Since there were MacBooks placed next to it, it is very clear that the new glossy screen on MacBook Air is not as reflective as MacBook's glossy screen. That is a bonus. (They don't have the glossy screen version of MacBook Pro there for comparison, or I might have missed it out.)

Apple's MacBook Air features page states:

A smart LED display.
The backlit LED display allows for an even thinner build. It provides instant full-screen brightness the moment you open MacBook Air. The mercury- and arsenic-free display is also more power efficient, which translates to longer battery life.

The cost of MacBook Air (lower-end version) is not that expensive (if compared to other 10-inch sub-notebooks featuring reduced-size keyboards.)

As for the lack of built-in optical drive, I am sure I don't have much access to optical drive on the road. Apple led the industry by not offering Mac machines with floppy drives since the release of iMac in 1998. PC users and many Apple haters bashed on that decision, and now, most PC laptops do not come with a floppy drives as well.

MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air

As for me on deciding whether to get the MacBook Air or the upcoming MacBook Pro. I am currently about 95% sure that I will get the updated version of MacBook Pro which features speed bump and larger L2 cache (on higher end), and powerful graphic card. I only have the main spec, not detailed one, and I don't know the releasing date.

I believe the extra power would suit me better than the ultra compactness.

Unlike Don who has 9 computers, I don't have 9 Macs, not even getting the upcoming MacBook Pro.
