1TB of storage

This is an overdue post.

SATA Xpress XP800-S

I bought an SATA Xpress XP800-S Dual Bay Triple (Firewire 800/400, USB 2.0, SATA) external hard drive case last July for the TV recording. As I can only watch digital TV on my 24-inch iMac with EyeTV Diversity. (To Don: this reads Antony is poor, he does not have a 40-inch Sony 1080p HD LCD TV).

SATA Xpress XP800-S

Why do I need such amount of space? Well, actually, I need Firewire 800 connection. As for video recording and editing (removing ads for archiving). USB 2.0 connection is not fast enough, particularly in HD (high definition) (1080i) TV recordings. And one hour of SD (standard definition) takes about 3.0 GB of HDD space, and 40 minutes of HD (high definition) TV recording takes about 3.6GB space. 40 minutes of the show is actually 1 hour show less the commercials. So I have a good reason to get the external HDD case in Firewire 800 connection.

The SATA Xpress XP800-S requires two SATA hard drives, and supports RAID 0. I bought two 500 GB SATA drives to make it 1TB. Only one 500GB HDD is photoed.

500GB HDD

Mac Pro drive baysSome of you may recall that I have 3 external hard drives (HDDs) connected (all via USB 2.0), this Firewire 800 HDD provides extra storage and speed. Although it is not that cheap, it proves to be useful. Perhaps, I should have bought one of the Mac Pros that provide plenty of room for internal HDD without the need to go external.

Antony, why do you have to re-assure this Don fellow that you are "poor" every time you buy an expensive gadget? There is an old remote village saying,"Don't show, don't explain."

Because he is still yet to believe me.

And meanwhile, I don't have digital TV at all. Hence, you have newer, better technology than I do, and on top of that I get a feeling you have much better reception than I do. You know, I have to wonder, with you buying all of this storage gear for recorded TV: wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy the show seasons on DVD? You may have to wait a bit, sure, but the savings seem like they'd be quite substantial.
