802.11n and gigabit ethernet!

802.11n

Finally, I got an 802.11n router at home. Just picked it up from CBD this afternoon. It's not Apple's new AirPort Extreme (Base Station), it's D-Link's Xtreme N Gigabit Router (DIR-655).

It's a bit odd that I don't go for Apple's product, the reason is (as I've told Mr Luchini) that Apple's new AirPort Extreme does not have gigabit ethernet ports (only fast Ethernet 100Mbps ports). In order to get Laurent's PC to work with this new wireless router, I also get a D-Link RangeBooster N 650 Desktop Adapter (A PCI card for 802.11n) for him. He pays for it.

D-Link DIR-655

802.11n is still in Draft stage, but shall I worry? No. Apple's Mac (with Intel Core 2 Duo) has 802.11n (draft) built-in. I am not worried about compatibility at all since my iMac works well with 802.11n router, plus it has the Gigabit ethernet I want!

D-Link DWA-547

The bad thing... my PowerBook G4 (1.33GHz, 12-inch) does not support 802.11n (it supports 802.11g), nor Gigabit Ethernet. The connection speed is still faster than using Laurent's 802.11g network (with his TPG internet). Note the comparison is not fair, as the speed might due to his TPG.

So far, it works great, except I am damn tired after a busy day. I've been really busy for the last few days, and a forum issue to deal with - a former disgraced member Tidus who once attacked SillyDog701 was back to SillyDog701 Message Centre. This time, seeking for forgiveness, except his apology is not sincere enough and quickly followed by another wave of attacks.

I should have time to install the 802.11n-draft PCI adapter on Laurent's computer tomorrow, and probably post more about the network.
