Firefox's unethical forcing users to update dirty tactic

shame on FirefoxLet me to ask you this question: how many of you would go through every single panels in Preferences and read through every thing? And how many of you really understand every settings?

I believe it is safe to say a number of software users do not bother to change the default settings of software, also a number of users do not feel comfortable on making changes to default settings.

Firefox, an open-source web browser embraced by a huge number of open-source extremists, takes this advantage (a huge number of users do not bother to check entire Preferences) and forces user to update.

Why do users must use the latest of whatsoever version available?

I saw this message dialogue:
Firefox forcing people updating
I didn't have much choice, did I? I was forced to update Firefox then or upon re-launching Firefox.

I then got this window.
Firefox forcing people updating

Okay, like many other users, I left my settings in Preferences as default.
Firefox Preferences setting
I should've opted not to let Firefox automatically download and install the update, but I did not go through that section of the Preferences.

From my experience with operating system and other software, many of them would check if the current installed version is latest or not, however, none of those would set it to download the update and install the update automatically. Mac OS X checks periodically, but would ask me if I want to download and install it.

Not everybody must live with the latest of whatsoever software or patches. Generally speaking, a huge percentage of Firefox's active users are university/college students, and many of them want everything free and opensource, as well as unable to live without the latest of software or patches. However, using such tactic (not everybody checks every settings of Preferences or confident on changing them) and forcing people to update the software is an unethical ploy.

Users were only informed after the update has been downloaded, (and would be installed once relaunching). That is, completely disrespecting users those who do not go through every single panel in Preferences.

shame on FirefoxIf you are one of the open-source extremists, you would probably support this dirty tactic... making more people using the latest of whatsoever software. If this is not the version updating, would you be happy that you were forced to do something without informing you first, and probably against your decision? When in fact Firefox could have showed courtesy by asking users' permissions first.

I was extremely unhappy about being forced to update Firefox to the latest version.

Shame on ya, Firefox. You can join me in Firefox's (semi) forced updating policy thread.

Mozilla only forces the update for critical security fixes. If you don't like that, you can turn it off in the preferences. Running a browser without the latest security fixes, however, is extremely foolish.

What a dork.

It's not about using the latest software just for the sake of having the latest; it's about security. You sound foolish referring to it as a 'dirty tactic'. However, I agree that the user should have the option to decline the update, with a warning about vulnerabilities.

Are these people who can't change their update settings the same people who can't be bothered to spell their blog headlines correctly? It's very unehtical indeed.

I've always made it a point to disable ANY automatic checking/downloading/updating; I check for updates on my own schedule. Yet I returned to my desk to find that Firefox forced an update on me today. I don't care if it's critical--it's just plain wrong of Firefox to ignore my settings.

Firefox constantly FORCES updates even when turned off. This is a well known fact. It is a problem with the program itself. Much like lost bookmarks.

Finally someone wrote about this! If Microsoft did this people would freak!
I always make sure the autoupdate feature is disabled. I should not have too! WHY??? BECAUSE of two reasons: 1. My pluggins might not be supported and 2. It's my friggin computer!
More then not I get autoupdated even when I know I've said no to it (like today). What's in it for them? I am a developer and I know it sucks for users to keep the old version around but I think there is more here...

"Running a browser without the latest security fixes, however, is extremely foolish." Are you kidding me? Oh no, I'm going to be overrun by big bad web pages! Thank goodness for that patch! The 0.0001% of us will be safe! If we turn autoupdate off by default Firefox may need to force a color-coded web threat advisory scale image to be displayed. Like the US Homeland Security department! Be afraid! Very afraid! :-)

What you call "Forced" updates are part of the security behind Firefox. Without updating, you often become more vulnerable to upcoming internet threats.
