After a disappointing second season, can the foxy ladies of Wisteria Lane draw viewers back to their melodramatic neighbourhood?

One is marrying a potential murderer, one's lover is in a coma, another is battling her husband's love child's mother... so it's business as usual for the foxy ladies of Wisteria Lane in this season three premiere.

But can Desperate Housewives wash out the aftertaste of season two, which can best be described as "disappointing"? The answer seems to be "yes"; season three has already catapulted this sudsy suburban satire back to the top of the ratings chart in the US.

Tonight's premiere sparkles like a finely polished wineglass that's filled to the brim with intriguing plots and witty banter. In short, the spark that made Housewives such a monster hit is back.

We open six months since the season two finale. Bree's (Marcia Cross) new boyfriend Orson (Kyle MacLachlan) pops the question - but she's unaware that he apparently popped his ex-wife. Susan (Teri Hatcher) tends to Mike (James Denton), who remains in a coma after Orson hit him with a car last season. Lynette (Felicity Huffman) must endure Nora (Kiersten Warren), the obnoxious mother of her husband's love child. And the deliciously bitchy Gaby (Eva Longoria) tries to outfox her very pregnant former maid Xiao-Mei (Gwendoline Yeo), who's carrying her surrogate baby. It's ridiculous, but very entertaining. If last year's silly stories turned you off, now is a great time to move back in to Wisteria Lane.
