hello Brother

Brother MFC-204CI have been looking for a scanner for the last few weeks. Finally, I got some time for shopping last Saturday. I've been using Canon's slim-design flatbed scanner for quite a while, and liked them. Except one problem... my ancient Canon CanoScan N670U do not work with Mac OS X natively.

Canon CanoScan N670U is a bit old, it's a single USB cord design (no power adapter to carry). The problem is... it is USB speed (not USB 2), and the driver only provides a plug-in for Photoshop 7. Since I am not a Photoshop professional, I'd like to have a scanner that works directly with OS X's Image Capture without using a third party software (VueScan).

I looked for Epson and Canon websites and I found that Epson's scanners are too expensive. (I don't like Hewlett-Packard's scanners... too complicated to operate.) Then I found one Canon CanoScan LiDE 70 which is about the same shape as my current CanoScan N670U but with USB 2 speed and native OS X support. The recommended retail price is AU$149.

On Saturday, John and I went to a few computer shops in Sydney. We discovered one thing, most computer shops do not carry many scanners (stand-alone), but they all have plenty of all-in-one machines (scanner, printer, copier, etc), and many all-in-one machines are cheaper than the CanoScan LiDE 70 I was looking for. Which makes sense to me that perhaps I should've looked for an all-in-one machine instead, although all I am interested is the scanner.

Then, there's one machine that caught my eye, Brother MFC-240C (pictured above). Not that I am interested in the printing or faxing features, but the included ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) is the thing I like. I do have quite a lot of document I want to scan. The RRP is AU$199, but The Good Guys sells it for $169 which is $20 more than the LiDE 70 model I originally planned, and $20 justifies the ADF.

So I bagged home with Brother MFC-240C. I am very happy with the machine. Except I have one question, can I use the ADF for feeding photos?
