comment spammers shalt be hanged

Few weeks ago, I mentioned SillyDog701 server has been under extremely high traffic load in the last few days, and the server has been knocked out a number of times since then. And it is getting worse.

I've been having chances to SSH into the server and monitoring when server was hung. To my surprise, there were more than 800 processes (using top command). A further investigation, it shows multiple processes calling Movable Type's perl script. That's more than 200 calls to Movable Type's mt-comments.cgi.

Movable Type has a great comment spam filter, but it was not designed to handle such amount of instances simultaneously. I contacted Six Apart (it's good to be a paid customer), they informed me that mt-comments.cgi is released as soon as it is completed, but Movable Type is called. David gave me some advice on how to prevent comment spammers (bots) attacking mt-comments.cgi.

Those comment bots have caused SillyDog701 server hanging a number times, and those people behind comment spams shalt be hanged.

Am I switching to WordPress? No. I will figure a way to combat those comment bots.
