Steve Irwin and media coverage

Steve "Crocodile Hunter" Irwin died on Monday morning around 11:30am (4th Sept 2006). He was filming a television program on the Great Barrier Reef off far north Queensland when the drama unfolded yesterday. Mr Irwin was killed by a stingray barb to the chest then to his heart.

I first heard the news from Tidus' post in SillyDog701 Message Centre. I was shocked a bit, but I am not that sad unlike many other Australians since I am not a Crikey fan.

On Monday, 7News () and National Nine News () both spend more than 10 minutes on the Steve Irwin story. That's more 1/3 of the time. Then, at 6.30pm Seven's Today Tonight (TT) spent 17 minutes on Irwin story, Nine's A Current Affair (ACA) spent more than 20 minutes.

On Tuesday, Steve Irwin's death was still the main news in both 7News and National Nine News. Both TT and ACA were presenting live from Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo. Today Tonight spent 19 minutes on Steve Irwin, while ACA only spent 13 minutes.

Channel Seven aired a special Steve Irwin: A Tribute on Tuesday 8.00pm for 30 minutes, hosted by Sunrise's Mel and Kochie. Nine will have and 1 hour tribute tonight on 7.30pm.

Monday night's news coverage was a bit too much, but people want to know more. Ratings on all news and current affair programmes saw a increase. (source: eNews)
