On very rare occasions the Southern Lights, or Aurora Australis, can be seen from Sydney. I recall seeing them when I was a child, though they were just a kind of pink glow from here. They are more often seen from Tasmania.

I remember long ago when I was about 5 or 6 years old. My father woke me from a sound sleep. He was excited and bundled me up to go outside. He said he wanted me to see something wonderful that I may never have the chance to see again. Yes. It was the Aurora Borealis. I stared in awed wonder at the gloreous site. We sat there for how long, I know not. He explained what he knew of the Lights. It is a night I have never forgotten - - for over 50 years now. He was right. I have never seen them since, but have never forgotten the magic of that vision. Many years following that spectacular evening, he apologized for having dragged me outside that night. He was a bit surprised to learn that I had held that cherished memory with me and was always grateful to him for giving me that wonderful gift.
