Seven Network programming director Tim Worner recently told The Age that downloading episodes was a "lovely problem" for local broadcasters to have.

FANS of Prison Break don't need to wait six months to find out what happens to their favourite escapees.

The premiere of the US drama's second season is now online: legally and for free.

Channel Seven aired the final episode of the hit series' first season on July 12 and is holding the second until the 2007 ratings year begins. But in the US the second series began on Monday and two websites — including the series' creator — have put legal copies of the new episode on the internet for anyone, anywhere, to watch.

"This trend is global," said technology consultant Brian Seth Hurst, who has helped Disney, British Telecom and the Discovery Network take advantage of emerging platforms.

"If Australian media companies are late to the party, that's their fault. Because the audience — who is pirating, who is downloading — they're way ahead of the companies," he said.

Most Australians download illegal copies of US shows using file-sharing software like BitTorrent. A recent report stated Australians are the second most voracious downloaders of pirated content in the world, after the United Kingdom.

But the advent of legal downloads will become an increasing headache for local free-to-air networks, whose revenue relies on advertisers reaching a large audience of local viewers.

Hit series Lost and Desperate Housewives, both on Seven, are sold on Apple's iTunes store the day after they first screen in the US.

Their sale is technically restricted — the store requires a US billing address — but copies quickly zip around the world to fans unwilling to wait for local networks to screen them.

Prison Break has been one of the strongest series to debut in Australia this year. A national average of more than 1.9 million viewers tuned in to the opening episode, with more than 1.5 million watching the cliffhanger ending.
