Judgement Day (Domesday)

Just a gentle reminder, today is the census day in Australia. According to The Daily Telegraph, the first book recording census data in England was nicknamed Domesday Book.

After William of Normandy invaded England in 1066 to become King William I, or William The Conqueror, he instituted a survey of his new realm. the resulting book Domesday Book because people said it was akin to facing the record of one's life, without appeal, on doomsday (domesday was a variation in the spelling), or Judgement Day. The method of collection was that census sessions were held in each town and the information was supplied by the local sheriffs and serfs (labourers bound to the landowner). The survey lists people, as well as their property and profession.
