Hyde Park fig trees to go

Hyde Park fig trees
Sydney's Hyde Park's iconic fig trees will be cut down due to risk to public.
Sydney City Council said more than 200 fig trees will go, and it will take 50 years to restore to today's look.

What happened to those trees? Council Arborist, Karen Sweeney, said the soil is contaminated by the excavation of Sydney's railway in the 1920s.

"Even though the trees might look healthy above ground, the disease concentrates [at the base]," she said.

Hyde Park is widely regarded as one of the best formal parks in the world because the trees are so old.

The only tree on top of the hill of One Tree Hill (Auckland) was chopped down on 26th October 2000, due to fears of public safety during strong winds. The pine tree on top of One Tree Hill was 125 years old.
