2006 Grammy Award

2006 Grammy Awardicon
Last night, the 48th Annual GRAMMY Awards paid tribute to the best musicians of the year, and boasted performances by Madonna, U2, Kanye West, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, and even Sly and the Family Stone. See who came out on top on music's biggest night.

Check Out The Winners List

Album of the Year
U2, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb

U2iconAlmost everyone expected this award to be a showdown between Kanye West and Mariah Carey for her surprisingly strong comeback in 2005. Not so fast, said U2 and the voting members of NARAS. How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb is an undeniably great album from a great band, full of classic songs including "City of Blinding Lights," "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own," and, of course, "Vertigo."

Best Alternative Rock Album
The White Stripes, Get Behind Me Satanicon

itms_white_stripes.jpgLast year Jack White graced the GRAMMYs as producer of Loretta Lynn's comeback triumph, Van Lear Rose. This year he and Meg White took the winners' podium for an album that exploded the idea that the White Stripes can be confined to any description that includes the term "minimalist." With Jack playing piano, marimbas, and (mostly acoustic) guitars, the duo added soul, country, metal, and funk to a palate that had previously been limited to bluesy punk.

Best Rap Album
iconKanye West, Late Registration

itms_kanye_west.jpgThe biggest ego and sharpest tongue in hip-hop cast aside any doubt of a sophomore slump when he released Late Registration. Not only did West tap an inspired choice for producer (Jon Brion), he collaborated with an impressive group of guests that included Jamie Foxx, Jay Z, Common, Paul Wall, and Adam Levine of Maroon 5. "Gold Digger" and "Heard 'Em Say" are the best-known hits, but almost every track here deserves to be heard.

Best Contemporary R&B Album
iconMariah Carey, The Emancipation of Mimi

itms_mariah_carey.jpgForget Glitter and the epic meltdowns: The Emancipation of Mimi announced the triumphant return of a diva too talented to stay away for long. While Mimi featured such stellar guest stars as Nelly, Snoop Dogg, and Jermaine Dupri, the album soars highest on songs that truly spotlight The Voice: "It's Like That," "Shake it Off," and "We Belong Together."
