don't wake up your neighbours
If you shut down your Mac completely (instead of putting it into sleep), you might found yourself in situations that booting up a Mac is sometimes quite loud. Particularly if you have a Power Mac.
StartupSound.prefPane is not a new tool, but it's worth recommending.
It does exactly as what's available in System Preference... you can adjust the sound volume, or even mute it completely.
> get StartupSound.prefPane now, it's free!
Because it's installed in your System Preference, it is recommended you read the ReadMe file before installing and keep the package somewhere safe.
