"your son is in jail" = best news in town?

According to News.com.au, the mother of an Australian man feared dead in the hurricane-devastated city of New Orleans was thrilled to learn her son was jailed and was well in the States.

A south-eastern Melbourne man was arrested in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina hit last week. Obviously, his family had feared the worst, and were expecting news that officials had found a body. Being in jail is definitely much better then being missing or dead.

His mother says she's been told he was arrested for drunkenness, although the Australian embassy says he was picked up for trespass. Bizarrely, the men found with his credit cards were freed after telling authorities Mr McDonald had given his wallet to them during a drinking session in New Orleans on August 27.

Mr McDonald was arrested that night.
